John 9:1–3 Healing a Man Born Blind: As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. His disciples questioned Him: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.

Last night my wife and I saw the movie, “Miracles from Heaven” featuring Jennifer Garner. First off, I highly recommend that you watch this movie because it’s very well written and is based on a true story. During Jesus’ time on earth the Jews believed that personal suffering was due to sins of the person or from the sins of his/her parents.

Yes, it’s true that sometimes a person’s sinfulness causes that person to suffer. For example, if you abuse alcohol and chain smoke cigarettes for an extended time while eating burgers and pizza every day you’re probably going to either die young or get a number of diseases along the way.

Note that when it came to drinking alcoholic beverages that I said “abuse” because there is no where in the Bible that says alcohol is forbidden – it’s the abuse of alcohol that causes sin. In fact, Jesus’ first miracle was turning 30 Urns at the wedding in Cana into 30 Gallons of wine. This was a request made by his earthly mother, Mary.

For those of us who Live By The Holy Spirit, obeying God’s precepts, commands and laws to our best ability, who agree (confess)to our sins as they occur, who surrender daily their lives in full faith and trust In Jesus, suffering is different.

Our suffering is allowed by Jesus so that His work can be seen in our lives. We are God’s children and God through Jesus answers our prayers, rewards our faith, provides for our protection, grants us wisdom, knowledge and understanding. God heals our diseases, feeds us, gives us peace and fills us with confidence and joy.

His Spirit teaches us how to endure our trial which is understanding the human condition and helping others to get through an imperfect world with faith and belief In Jesus. Listen, never point the finger at someone because we are all still in our sinful nature and from time to time sin.

John said that if any person claims to be without sin he makes himself a liar and the truth is not in him. Now, if we live in sin, John said that this person never knew God. Let’s never judge another person because only God can judge. We can use righteous judgment when necessary because without this we cannot prevent others from making erroneous decisions that can lead to horrible consequences.
