And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath – Ephesians 2:1-3
The only exception, of course, Jesus, who was without sin. Yes, we were once enemies of God prior to receiving grace and mercy which began the process of sanctification in us. Sanctification is the lifelong process by which those who are born again become holy and separate unto God.
We have yielded our lives to God and have made a commitment to be obedient by following God’s commands. Following God is completely impossible without the Holy Spirit. Prior to receiving the Holy Spirit the Apostles could not begin to fulfill the Great Commission or take part in saving souls.
The same is true for us. Prior to being born again (I will describe this in another segment) we were dead spiritually. We were literally enemies of God because like Adam and Eve, we rebelled against God. Sin entered through one man and thus entered all men, remember?
Yes, we are all equal in the eyes of our creator. Even Mary needed a savior because there is only one who was born without sin. Mary said that anyone who loves Jesus is his mother, brother or sister. She did not say Father because the Father to Jesus is the sovereign ruler of the universe who is his co-equal.
We are all siblings of Jesus because once you are born again you become God’s child. A child of God is a brother or sister to Jesus because Jesus is also God’s Son.
Today, make it your goal to fully humble yourself especially when you are witnessing to those who were just like you before accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. As followers of Christ we are the lowliest on earth and place all others above ourselves in importance. Why? Because we are blessed beyond all imagination and call God our Father and Jesus our Lord and Savior.
