The First Epistle of Paul to the Thessalonians
Thessalonians was written around 51-52 AD by Apostle Paul. Paul founded this church during his 2nd missionary journey (Acts 17:1-9). He faced intense opposition by the Jews so he had to work fast, he was only there from 3 weeks to a few months time.
When Paul left the church, he sent Timothy to take over. The theme of Thessalonians centers around the return of Christ and filling believers with hope, faith and the strength to be patient until he returns.
My two favorite verses are the following:
1. 1 Thessalonians 4:16
” For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. “
This is a beautiful description of the moment when Jesus returns for His church. The dead in Christ will rise first and all who remain alive in Christ, on Earth, will rise next. This is not the 2nd coming of Christ, that takes place when Jesus stands on the Mount of Olives and establishes his kingdom on Earth.
2. 1 Thessalonians 4:17
“After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”
This is the Rapture! It is the promise that Jesus made in John 14:1-3 to prepare a place for all believers in Christ to be with him forever. Jesus is our faithful bridegroom.
So, how should we respond to these verses? My take is to always be prepared for the return of Jesus. Jesus said that he will come like a thief in the night. This means that there will be no alerts, no public announcements, no billboards, no radio or TV shows preparing us for his return.
Will you be ready for the triumphant return of Jesus? How will Jesus find you – spiritually?
Joshua 1:8 tells us:
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”
Let’s get ready for the return of Jesus!
